Courtney Faller, Head Coach

"Coach Courtney" began coaching in 1997 for Green Mountain Aquatics in Vermont, and has lived and coached in Charleston since 2000. He coached for City of Charleston Swim Team, Charleston Area Swim Team, and I'On Riptides 2001-2004, then stepped away from the sport to concentrate on his business ventures. Upon returning to coaching in 2012, he became the Head Coach of I'On Riptides and the founder and Head Coach of I'On Hurricanes. During all his time coaching, Coach Courtney helped multiple first time qualifiers for SC State Championships, Southern Zone Age Group Championships, and Southern Zone Senior Sectional Championships. Most importantly, the swimmers he coaches always enjoy improvement rates well above and often doubling the national average.

Coach Courtney swam for the University of Michigan, earning All-American and Academic All Big 10 honors. Married with four dogs, you often see him walking his mongrels on local beaches.

Jonas Sosa, Jr.

2017 marks the 25th year for "Coach Sosa" in swimming. He started in 1992 as an assistant in Chicago for the McKinley Park summer swim team. He continued coaching in the area until he moved to Kentucky in 2004. Jonas started numerous developmental teams and coached several high school teams in Kentucky until 2016, when he moved to Charleston. His first year in the area saw him coach the I'On Summer Storms summer league team to its highest finish in history, his Academic Magnet girls team to repeat its State Championship, and the boys team to finish as runner up.

Coach Sosa's many accomplishments include: 2016 AAA SCHSL Girls Coach of the Year; 2007 Kentucky Region 2 Coach of the Year; nationally ranked high school teams in 2008, 2009, and 2014; 2014 Kentucky High School Coach of the Year nominee; and assistant coaching high school back to back state champion teams 2007-2009.

Coach Sosa is an "Army Brat." He spent his formative years in Germany, where his fondest overseas memory is watching and participating in the Fall of the Wall. Jonas is married, has three children, and lives in Hanahan.

Our Purpose

To teach, to learn, and to improve. These are the words we live by.

Our Method

We obsessively drill kids on technique and fundamental habits in swimming. We teach the Growth Mindset to allow them to achieve their potential. And we develop the team as a Rising Tide to push all of our swimmers to the highest achievement levels.

Our Results

During our 5 year term at the I'On Hurricanes, we delivered improvement averages in excess of 4-5%, well above the national average of 2-3%. While other teams' improvement averages aren't public, we remain confident our improvement rates are the best in Charleston, in South Carolina, and one of the best in the South.
